Power/Poison

Three young brothers are home alone. Their father has left and promised to return but after some time the boys begin to wonder if he is ever coming back. The brothers are faced with a series of problems that they need to solve in order to survive and to bring some stability to their lives. What will they eat? Who will be in charge?

Power/PoisonPower/Poison focuses on sibling relationships within an uncertain world and constant conflict, as is the case in Palestine where the home environment is often affected by the instability outside. The play deals with the fear of abandonment that is common among all children – but in Palestine this fear is aggravated by arbitrary arrests or killings that separate children from parents.
“Power/Poison will give us a chance to engage directly with children and youth who face the particular problems that the play highlights”, says Nabil Al-Raee, director of the play. “They will be given space to think and share their thoughts on these themes in a safe and caring environment.”

The play puts the spotlight on how children copy the reality they see around them, in this case Jenin Refugee Camp, and how the behaviour of adults affect how children imagine their future.

“At The Freedom Theatre we believe that theatre and arts in general are important tools to help young people and ourselves to reflect about the dynamics of our lives under occupation", says Nabil Ak-Raee. "Art gives us the opportunity to deal with it in a healthier way, and come to terms with the fact that we are even deprived of a 'normal' happy childhood."

Power/Poison features Alaa Shehada and Motaz Malhees, alumni of The Freedom Theatre School, a three-year professional acting program, along with Milad Qunebe. The play will open in Jenin on January 4, 2015.
