A violent Israeli attack on the Gaza strip is projected on numerous TV screens. Amidst the chaos of screaming sirens and shelling, Amal, embodying her own country, Palestine, is lying in a hospital bed in the middle of the stage. Her heartbeat has stopped and medical staff wearing white, UN-marked coats are trying to resurrect her. Amal has decided to die as a political act.
Suicide Note from Palestine, originally produced in 2013 and performed to wide acclaim in Jenin Refugee Camp, is now re-staged and performed to new audiences. The play opens on December 18 at The Freedom Theatre.
Suicide Note from Palestine uses social satire to present a rare window into the younger generation of Palestine; a generation just as hopeless about their present as they are about the future. The play centers around Amal, a young woman who during an intense nightmare is confronted with strange characters that represent some of the key players that shape the history, land, politics and occupation of her country.
