Return to Palestine comes to Europe

return.to.palestine

Return to Palestine was originally produced in 2016 as part of the project ‘Interactive theatre as a tool for social change’ implemented by The Freedom Theatre in partnership with Ashtar for Theatre Production and Training.

In a comic and tragic way, the play tells the story of American born Palestinian Jad who returns to his homeland. Here, he discovers Palestine is different from what is told on the news. The physical performance takes place at just a small part of the stage, which symbolises the restricted space of the Palestinian people. The play is based on true stories of life in Palestine, gathered through playback theatre during The Freedom Theatre’s Freedom Bus ride. It was originally produced in 2016, directed by Micaela Miranda.

Since its opening, this production has toured all over the West Bank and performed at several international theatre festivals including Turkey, Jordan, Portugal, Egypt and Kuwait.

Return to Palestine will embark on a string of performances in Sweden, France and Luxembourg later on this month. At the end of October, graduates of The Freedom Theatre school (who helped devise the play) will head to Europe and spend a month in Sweden, France, Ireland and Luxembourg with a number of performances, post show discussions and Q&A sessions. This will be the first time we visit these areas in Luxembourg, Ireland and France and we hope to reach as many communities (both English and Arab speaking) as possible.
