Summer at The Freedom Theatre

Ramadan has been a busy month at The Freedom Theatre, with a string of cultural events including hip hop, stand-up comedy and film screenings - and now we are shifting into an even higher gear!

We start off with an intensive training of theatre trainers, among them three generations of graduates of our Theatre School, who will then initiate their own theatre clubs in communities in the northern West Bank. Through the new clubs, young people who otherwise have no access to theatre will get a taste of its magic. All the clubs will work towards presentations that we aim to showcase to the community in a theatre festival next summer.

Public film screenings and discussions for both children and adults will be organised, and our multimedia team is also initiating a new photography course and an arts workshop for young adults that includes mural painting. The next issue of our youth magazine Voices will be published in September.

The pedagogical training of early childhood educators continues in full force, as does our playschool for small children.

Our highly popular summer camp will begin in mid-July and running until mid-August. Children will take part in activities in theatre, movement, dabke (folklore dance), photography, arts, games and nature trips, led by local and international trainers.

“We want to give children the free space to develop skills and discover their own creativity,” says Suzan Wasfi, coordinator of the child and youth program at The Freedom Theatre. “In the summer camp, they will be able to express themselves freely and discover the subjects they love.”

Preparations are also under way for several new theatre productions at The Freedom Theatre. In September, The Siege, one of our most successful productions to date, will be re-staged to tour in the United States in October. More details on that tour will follow soon!
